The purpose of using base64 to encode data is that it translates any binary data into purely printable characters. It is specified in RFC 2045 (http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc2045.html).

HTTP Basic authentication: encode your username and password as one string, and add it as a header of an HTTP request. When a page requiring basic authentication gets called from a browser it results in a generic Username/Password dialog from that browser.
